Bats, bats, bats!

Bats, bats, bats!

Did you know that there are 4 different kinds of species at risk bats in Muskoka?

  • Small-footed Myotis
  • Northern Long-eared Myotis
  • Little Brown Myotis
  • Tri-coloured Bat

Many people will automatically associate bats with Halloween, because of their colour and because bats are nocturnal,(meaning they sleep during the day and then come out at night). However bats are not dangerous to humans, they actually help us!

During the summer and spring months the bugs can be bad, especially near forests and wetlands, this is where our friends the bats come in! Bats help with pest control because they eat insects, some species of bats are capable of eating their entire body weight worth of insects each night.

What can you do to help save the bats?

Bat boxes are a fantastic way to help the bats!

These boxes make an amazing place for bats to live. Because natural bat habitats are being destroyed by development, bat boxes are a great alternative.
