Monarch Butterflies

Did you know that a Monarch caterpillar its sole source of food is the milkweed plant?

Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on milkweed plants so the caterpillar can start to feed on the milkweed plant as soon as possible.

You can help the monarch butterflies by planting habitat along their migration trail such as a butterfly garden!

In your butterfly garden include:

  1. Common Milkweed
  2. Butterfly milkweed
  3. Swamp Milkweed
  4. Purple cone flower
  5. Black eyed Susan

By planting these plants you can create a sanctuary for monarch butterflies to land, feed ans lay eggs on their long migration.

The monarch migration:

  1. In the fall and winter the Monarchs travel from southern Canada and the United States down to Mexico
  2. In the spring they begin their journey north laying eggs along the way
  3. 2 or 3 generations later (from the butterflies that left mexico) Monarchs start to approach southern Canada
